Drive to magnificent Hogenakkal waterfalls

Hogenakkal Falls or Hogenakal Falls is a waterfall in South India on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, about 180 km (110 mi) from Bangalore , 350 KM from Chennai , 110 KM from Salem and 46 km (29 mi) from Dharmapuri town. It is sometimes referred to as the “Niagara of India”. With its fame for medicinal baths and hide boat rides, it is a major site of tourist attraction. This reference is taken from wikipedia , and more details about Hogenakkal Falls available at WIKI

Here is a various routes from Bangalore to reach to Hogenakkal Falls

Route 1 ) Silkboard junction -> Hosur -> Haleseebam -> Palacode -> Hogenakkal Waterfalls

Route 2 ) Silkboard junction -> Hosur -> Nallaganakothapalli -> Samanthamalai -> Dharmapuri -> Hogenakkal Falls ( Via NH7)
Route 3)  Silkboard junction -> Electronic City -> Anekal -> Denkanikottai  -> Hogenakkal Waterfalls

Route 4)  Bangalore -> Kagalipura -> Kanakapura -> Hogenakkal Waterfalls

This was my 5th visit, and this time also we had taken , safe and smooth route which is Route1. once we had taken Route 2 , since we had plan to have breakfast at Kamath. one of my friend told me about route 4 which passes through forest area, and this is a short and adventurous route.

I will always recommend Route 1 and second option would be Route 2.

We have planned to start by 5 am , which eventually turned out to be 7.30 am from silk board junction bangalore , and finally we took off at 8 am from silk board , we took elevated flyover and its straight road till hosur and as per the plan we had gone through Route 1. We stoped in  various places for photography , and finally we reached by 12 o'clock.

it was crowded Sunday, but manage to park our car in between two car with less than a feet gap, phew it was a tough parking. the moment we got down a monkey snatches our whole snack packet from muki's hand , and they started eating, this view was totally enjoyed by my little one , and moment horrified Mr. Mukibul.

It was very Hot so we decided to take boat as soon as possible and head towards Island. We always enjoyed this boat ride , River in between two rock mountain and you are going by coracle ride what else we need :-).

On the way to Island from coracle ride we clicked some  images.

We reached Island within 20 minutes , Coracle rider told us waiting time would be half an hour , so please come back within 30 minutes , there after he will charge extra money if crosses 30 minutes ,

well we knew it that we will cross 30 minutes. he stopped his boat near places where fish seller were selling their fried fish , from there one has to walk ~= 100 meters , on the whole  way to island fish seller ladies will be behind you to buy fish from them , well we were not interested so we denied.

the moment we reached island we jumped on to island and we walked through stream to other side of river , we kept our bags, camera bags and we jumped on to island, enjoying stream in Hogenakkal Waterfalls is best part , our son totally enjoyed it :-).

Island Image:

Everything is awesome here , View of beautiful waterfalls , the push of island streams , coracle rides , and when rider whirl his boat that is a really awesome experience.

What i disliked here -> (1) For maximum tourist whole waterfall is dust been, they were throwing their all kind of stuff here and there. here you can notice amount of garbage at one of the waterfall.

2) Another part we disliked is Oil Bath , people were taking Oil Massage ( this oil massage was like they are applying full drum of oil on their body ) followed by Bathing on river using Soap , this act is totally destroying beauty of river and eco system as well up to some extent. I wish people should realize this very soon.

After coming back to main fall we took some pictures of main falls and by 4 PM we started back to Bangalore.

Main Fall and other stream images :

Yercaud – A hill station in the Eastern Ghats

Yeracaud is a hill station in eastern ghat , It is sitiuated at Shevaroys range of hills , and nearly 30 km from salem district. It is situated at an altitude of 1515 metres (4970 ft) above sea level, and the highest point in Yercaud is the Servarayan temple, at 5,326 feet (1,623 m). It is so named owing to the abundance of trees categorised as a forest near the lake, the name signifying Lake Forest. As a popular tourist destination, Yercaud is also called as Jewel of the South. Yercaud is connected to the city of Salem, Tamil Nadu through a Highway of 28 km ( This reference details are taken from WIKI ). Yercaud is 230+ km from Bangalore and 360+ from chennai.

Our trip journey – One fine day my husband and his friend Atul made a sudden plan for Yercaud , Actually plan was for Munar or Kodai Kanal , then finally due do distance factor we end up choosing Yercaud.

It was long weekend (May 1st labor day), so we started on Thursday morning 7 am, plan was for 5 am but those days are gone when we executed and started as per planned time :-), Meeting point was Silk Board Junction , Bangalore. We met at silk board junction and started our journey, We traveled through electronic city elevated flyover and from there it was straight road, no left and right only straight road to Salem via NH7, NH7 will lead you to Salem. In between we thought of taking a  break but our kids were sleeping so plan was to cover distance as much as possible till they are sleeping , we reached Salem somewhere around 1 pm , from salem we had taken cherry road to SH 188 , and we followed SH 188 till Yercaud Foot hills. From the foot hill to top of Yercaud there are 20 Hair Pin bend and approximately 25 km of distance.

From Yercaud Foot hills to Top one will encounter 20 Hair Pin Bend like as given in bellow picture.

We reached to Resort Clifton Inn somewhere around 3 PM. We had chosen budget stay, positive point with Clifton INN was that in front of our room there was a big terrace so our kid enjoyed a lot, service and food was so-so. First day food experience was not that good , since we reached at 3 PM , Clifton INN’s kitchen was closed so does other restaurant’s kitchen , we walked near the city area and took parcel (Masala Dosa + Idaly ) , after eating those food one of the friend got stomach upset,  advantage with Clifton is View of Salem night scape was beautiful within walk able distance.
There is small resort called Misty view, it is 50-100 meter from Clifton Inn , view from there garden is beautiful , early morning misty view where whole one can see that whole Salem city is covered by cloud and night view is just amazing , some images of night scape and early morning landscape.

Visit to Majestic Jog Falls

Gerosoppa Falls or Joga Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India, Located in Sagara taluk, these segmented falls are a major tourist attraction. They are also called Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.

It is located on the Shimoga and Uttara Kannada district border.
Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River dropping 253 m (830 ft), making it the second-highest plunge waterfall in India after the Nohkalikai Falls with a drop of 335 m (1100 ft) in Meghalaya.

Sharavati, a river which rises at Ambutirtha, next to Nonabur, in the Thirthahalli taluk and takes the northwesterly course by Fatte petta, receives the Haridravati on the right below Pattaguppe and the Yenne Hole on the left above Barangi. On arriving at the frontier it bends to the west, precipitates itself down the Falls of Gersoppa, and passes that village (properly Geru-Sappe), which is some 29 kilometres distant, discharging into the sea at Honnavar in North Kanara.

Note : Above reference note about Jog Falls are taken from wikipedia , More details about Jog Falls are available in WIKI.

Experience with Jog Falls :
We visited Jog falls during end of July 2013 , and when we visited Jog , there was heavy rain falls , visibility of waterfall was zero as it was surrounded by mist , but during those hide and seek whenever jog was showing its presence we got only one word to say Majestic ,yeah it was really majestic , and we enjoyed lot with its beauty, Best time to visit Jog falls is July to August.

Our Journey and route map (Reference from Google Maps) :

We planned our trip in this way - We will start our journey by 5 A.M. , we always keep 2-3 hrs buffer for spending some time for all those scenic view whichever pass through during our journey. so based on all these calculation we though we will reach shimoga by 1 pm and another 1 hrs for Thirthahalli , yeah we decided like this way , first day we will spent time in Thirthahalli  and early next morning we will head towards Jog Falls , and while returning back we can take rest in some hotel in Shimoga , our preference was Royal Orchid for shimoga.

I was going through various home stay option in to spent one day at Thirthahalli area, and finally booked Bananki Homestay , I always prefer credit card payment , and best thing was that , bananki homestay is listed in stayzilla as most of the other homestay wasn't available, well we planned to see jog falls during 27th July 2013,

From Bangalore we started on 26th July 2013 somewhere near 7.30 AM ( planned was 5 A.M.) ,

We have taken route for Thirthahalli : Bangalore - Nelamangala - Tumkur - Tiptur - Arsikere - Tarikere - Shimoga - Mattur - Thirthahalli.

After Tumkur road trip experience was amazing , we stopped couple of times to enjoy nature and capture couple of pictures , near Tiptur we were blessed to see family of Egyptian Vulture and my husband did not miss the chance to photograph them , of course without disturbing them.

We spent some time watching them and had our Tea.
Then Started our journey and after some hours again we had to wind up our journey near Arsikere left and right view of Sunflower Paddyfield was amazing , we clicked some images even though it was raining :-)

after couple of Hours we started our Journey , Just before we reach to shimoga, we got a call from arpitha from banaki homestay and she informed us that Honavar road is blocked due to heavy flood in Tunga river , and she guided us very well with alternative route , well local confused us and they lead us to Honavar road only , but we were lucky road condition was not that bad , there was flood but drivable , instead we enjoyed the beauty of Tunga river attached to Honavar road, Flood look was scary but adventurous, first time was saw flood and we were thrilled to see it, Shimoga to Thirthahalli drive via Honavar is a rain-forest , and during raining season we were experiencing heavy rain fall , we were unable to see anything through windshield even though wipers were in full speed

Finally Some Pictures of Flood.

Finally reached Home stay at 3 PM , and when we reached to Homestay , arpitha and rachan welcomed us very nicely, Location was awesome. Service and everything was perfect , we were four people along with an infant kid, and we didn't felt any issue. we liked food quality too , but our relative they didnt enjoy taste of food , most probably first time they had different flavor of food , overall we enjoyed a lot during our stay.

Next Morning we had heavy breakfast and started our journey to visit Jog Falls. Thirthahalli to Jog Falls drive is in via Ghat Section we enjoyed it.  We reached a point from where Jog falls can be seen , Large number of  visitors we were unable to find a place to park our car and our young Kid got frustrated and started crying badly , hence we were unknowingly parked car in No Parking area, and we left for view point, Jog visibility was very less due to mist and fog , but whenever it was showing its presence we were just saying word awesome. We came back to our car as Trafic police was complaining about Car parked  at no parking area , then kavi went in a mission to find proper car park area to park the car , he reported it was really tough time to find car park area.
Tourist Enjoying Beauty of Jog Falls
Majestic Jog Fall
After visiting jog falls we headed to Shimoga, and  we stayed one night at Royal Orchid Central, Everything was perfect ambiance , cleanness and most important polite staff, we had tasty dinner and next morning we had really tasty breakfast which was included in our package.

After having Breakfast we just roam around Shimoga district and then we though of visiting Shimoga Zoo Also known as Tiger and Lion Safari Zoo, nicely maintained zoo , we were blessed to see melanistic leopard , First time in life we have seen melanistic leopard and we were so happy.

Some Pictures from Zoo.

We clicked some images in zoo and then we started our journey back to Bangalore. Overall a Great Trip

What We missed :
1)   Jog View from Other side ( Back side)
2) Gokarna : Gokarna is 200 km from Thirthahalli , Gokarna is famous for their temples and unspoiled beach like Kodalu beach and Om Beach.
3) Missed to see Mandagadde Bird Sanctuary , Agumbe and Chibbalagudde due to flood in Tunga River.

All images are taken by me or my husband , and we have licensed some of these images to Stock photo agencies , and our own production house http://www.ephotobuy.com/ , please feel free to contact us if you have any images needs , you can directly browse and get images from http://www.ephotobuy.com/

One day outing to Shivanasamudra Falls.

Shivasamudra is town , and it is famous for two water falls Gaganachukki  and Bharachukki Waterfalls , and its place where Asia's first Hydro-electricPower stations was installed. At Bharachukki Falls one can take bath and can have boat ride , i am not sure about Gaganachukki  as we couldnt visit during current visit,

We were planning to visit these waterfalls from long back , and when parents arrived to Bangalore we decided to execute it , we visited Shivasamudra during mid of December 2013 in our own car.

Route direction -> Nearly 140 km from Bangalore, and we had taken Nice road.
Nice Road , then exit to Kankapura road , if your are entering into Kanakpura road from Outer ring road then fine , On other ring road all the way to JP nagar one has turn left on Kankapura road , if you are going via NICE road then carefully notice about kankapura exit , other wise you would end up crossing exit and U turn is little away to get in Kanakpura road again. Take kankpura exit , on kanakpura road there is no confusion , Drive straight on Kankapura road approximately 70 km on NH 209 , ask some one regarding driving direction at Malavalli  town.

We always preferred Kankapura road if any destination falls via this road , Left and right greenery is just awesome , well it is not that awesome now as it was earlier than 2010 , one can notice number of lakes on left and right side of the road throughout the road , our recent visit to Shivasamudram and left and right view really disappointed us , once upon time of beautiful lakes are now either converted to farm land or it is taken for some building construction. all these development are really developing society or we are going towards some thing bad, well right now i will leave about this , its our old emotions with those lakes , where we spent hrs and hrs enjoyed nature , spent most of the hours watching birds.

so lest get back to NH 209 to Shivasamudra , road conditions are fine , but its single lane , and some people drive really bad on this road , so be careful while driving , and if you are driving in your own prefer to start early from shivsamudra , avoild night driving.

We stopped to some place 30 km before Malavalli  town , view was amazing , sugar cane view and landscape was so beautiful , we had taken Tea here and relaxed for some time , from home itself we packed our lunch and kept tea in thermos   , Some scenic view Picture from this place.

Sugar cane Paddy

After crossing malavali take left or ask some one about driving direction for falls , after taking left towards shivasamudra falls you will find 3 bridges , very narrow bridge , i guess it can accept only one vehicle at time , with little skill it can accommodate two small hatch back type of cars.

We did a mistake during our trip , we straight way went to bharachukki Falls and spent most of our time there , around 4 pm  we thought of moving back and we decided on the way we will cover gaganchukki , for gaganchukki all the people started giving various direction , even our navigation map did not help us :-( , and we wasted our time driving here and there and it was already sun down , then parent told we will leave for Bangalore as it was already getting late.

after coming to bangalore i closely looked into map and found that there is small way after coming from malavali , one has to take left which lead to Gaganchukki,  Just after one week we recommended friend this way , first visit gagan chukki and then bharachikki and he successfully visited both the falls.

i am adding driving direction map here.

Some More Pictures of Bharachukki Waterfalls ->

Please do share with Friends and Family ,  This information can be helpful for those who are planning to visit these Falls.

Where To Stay :

Actually we prefer to stay in home stay rather than resort or hotel. Actually Coorg is very special for homestay. As homestay is surrounded by coffee and spices plantation .Its like  living in small mini forest.you can hear bird chirping sound, wild insects sound . Its so natural and lively which you can’t experience in resort. You can also enjoy their homemade food and their own cultivated coffee.
Near Marcad Homestay

We stayed in Marcad homestay twice , and experience with Marcad was really Great ,  actually it was run by a small family ,they serve really good home food with snacks on evening , dinner , breakfast just we need to order. Third time We have stayed in budget home stay “Haveli” , very cheap but not Hygiene , its situated in between the place like forest , Though we felt little unhygienic here but we enjoyed a lot , infect if you are wildlife enthusiast specially interested in bird watching / bird photography you can consider to chose Haveli as well but keep in mind your Hygine Thought. My Hubby had very nice experience with Honey Valley Estate as well.
